It has been several years since I have posted. In looking back on lessons learned from attempts I have made at blogging in the past, I think I am going to focus on more of an intimate portrait of myself and my thoughts. If you want to post a comment, please be kind. We may not agree, but there is a real sentient person on the other side of this technological tool. The golden rule still applies.
Each of us is a real person with hopes, fears, ambitions, interests, secrets, and sins. What we see on the outside of people is an illusion, a mask, a facade. Like Potekin Village, we seek to put forth the image of health and well-being, while concealing the hurts and flaws of mortality. I would like to strip off the mask and stop trying to hide.
I watched the movie Frozen yesterday. Incredible how the Disney artists are able to convey complex characters through their drawings! Elsa transforms from a fearful, closeted, smothered girl, to a brilliant, scintillating, confident woman; embracing her curse, reveling in the wonder of her existence in all of its danger and beauty! It is only when we accept ourselves that we are free.
Perhaps that is what I want to do with this blog; strip off the gloves, construct my icy palace, and embrace the dangerous and beautiful me. Who am I?
I have depression and ADHD. What do those words mean? To some they are crippling conditions that doom a person to all kinds of risks. I have a higher risk of sexual promiscuity, drug abuse, divorce, chronic unemployment, poverty, and a wealth of various health problems because I have these disabilities.
But are they disabilities? I choose to see them as characteristics; like hair and eye color, they are morally neutral. Like Elsa's curse, that is also a gift; my depression and ADHD are both dangerous and beautiful. Being different from others keeps me from being complacent and helps me to relate to others who find themselves on the fringes of society. My depression keeps me dependent upon God. My ADHD helps me see the wonder of the present moment while surrounded by others whose focus is more perfect, but directed at the wrong things.
To the reader, I don't expect that my words will reach a large audience. In which case, thank you for investing your valuable time. I hope it is of some value to you. Namaste.
